Answer to Question 1

Answer: The ideal answer will include:
1. A refugee is an internationally displaced person; many are fleeing persecution in their country of origin.
2. Anthropological studies of refugees have revealed widespread abuse of women and girls in refugee camps including rape and trading sex for food.
3. On the other hand, some more positive experiences have been reported, such as refugees having the opportunity to learn to read while in a camp.
4. Anthropologists recommend that people working with refugees pay attention to social dimensions including vulnerabilities and strengths of the displaced people.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The ideal answer will include:
1. Right of return is a guarantee of the ability of refugees to resettle in their country of origin.
2. It dates to the Magna Carta, was endorsed by the United Nations in a 1948 resolution, then was classed as an inalienable right by that organization in 1974.
3. The large population of Palestinian refugees living outside their homeland within Israel is one example.
4. A second example described in the text is internally displaced persons who were forced to leave New Orleans as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Economically it is difficult for many to return to New Orleans, but the concept of the right of return suggests they should be able to.
