2. All cultures have rules and expectations about what is good art. This statement became especially clear to anthropologists when they began to study art in Africa, where guidelines about what is good art are strikingly different from those of Western art at the time.
3. West African wood carving emphasizes light and lines and angles. It prevents the artist from depicting realistic faces of people; instead, they must be abstract and neither very young nor very old.
