Answer to Question 1

Using information from Chapter 1, explain the relationship between language and literacy.

Language refers to oral language (communicating via speaking and listening.) Literacy refers to reading and writing (communicating through print). In oral language, the spoken word represents meaning. In written language, printed symbols represent spoken words, in turn, represent meaning. The relationship is clear in reading. For a reader to get meaning from the text, most of the words in the text must be in the reader's oral vocabulary.

Answer to Question 2

What advise (based on research) would you offer a new parent about their child's language development?

Language development depends on parents interactions with their children. Parents use of parentees, an exaggerated, slower pace speech helps children develop an acoustical map of their native language.

Language development follows a predictable sequence, the rate at which children acquire language varies tremendously. Gender, socioeconomic level, and cultural influences all can affect the rate of language acquisition. A child's language learning can also be impeded by illnesses, such as otitis media, and by a variety of congenital problems of a physical and/or neurological nature. Parents and caregivers are cautioned to seek a medical diagnosis if language development is significantly delayed, as early identification and treatment can often avoid irreparable disruption of the language acquisition process.
