The joint narrows as it degenerates, and crepitus occurs as the articulating surfaces of the bone abnormally move against each other. Disease in symmetrical joints is characteristic of RA. Morning stiffness lasting for 1 hour or more is characteristic of polymyalgia rheumatica. Swelling from excessive synovial fluid is characteristic of RA.
