Historical fiction helps adolescents:
 
  a. to understand the pessimism and cynicism of everyday life and the problems that people must face.
  b. to see some challenges have recurred throughout history and should be accepted as inevitable.
  c. to make connections between the past and the present and to place events in an historical context.
  d. to realize how good life is now as compared to 300 years ago.

Question 2

Regardless of the historical period being written about, good writers of historical fiction
 
  a. avoid issues that might be deemed inappropriate for young adults and might raise censorship concerns.
  b. realize historical fiction should be read for enjoyment since most middle and secondary teachers do not want to use it as an integrating device in interdisciplinary units.
  c. achieve a sense of authenticity, whereby readers believe that the cultural, social, and political events as well as the feelings, joys, disappointments, and frustrations of the characters actually could have happened.
  d. deal with the fact that all historical events must be chronologically ordered to avoid confusion due to young adults' cognitive development.
