Answer to Question 2

There are two basic types of tasks teachers use to assess students' memories. First, recall tasks: a person is asked to produce information from memory. In free recall, students are presented with a list of items and must recite back the items in any order they prefer. In serial recall, students are presented with a list of items, and their task is to repeat the items back in the order they were presented. In paired-associates recall, students are presented with items in pairs. When they are tested, students are given the first item of each pair, and they must repeat back the item with which the first item was paired. The other kind of task used to assess memory is a recognition task, in which students have to select or identify something that they learned previously.
