Answer to Question 1

A case study would be best for studying synesthesia because some estimates say that only about one person in 100,000 experiences synesthesia. So it would be very difficult to get a group for study.
A group study would be inappropriate even if there were a large number available because they each show such different experiences. There may be little commonality in the way they experience the world, so making statements about them as a group might provide little information.

Answer to Question 2

Applied research using the experimental analysis of behavior typically involves an individual whose behavior is to be changed. It is likely to involve human, clinical work. On the other hand, the theoretical research in this domain frequently uses animals.
