Answer to Question 1

1 . Do people who use tanning beds frequently respond to questions about their behavior in ways similar to the answers of people experiencing other addictions?
2 . Was exposure to ultraviolet radiation responsible for the body's response (versus a tanning bed with no such radiation)?
3 . When tanners got a drug that blocked the effects of ultraviolet radiation, did tanning decrease in frequency?

Answer to Question 2

Hypothetical constructs are concepts that we can't observe directly. Sometimes we may think we are dealing with a useful concept that will help us understand behavior. After a while, though, it may become apparent that the concept isn't all that useful.
Emotional intelligence may turn out not to be more helpful in understanding behavior than other personality traits that have already been documented and accepted as useful. So we might abandon the construct of emotional intelligence as a separate and independent psychological characteristic.
