Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser's nationalization of the canal in 1956 led immediately to a British, French, and Israeli invasion of Egypt and a conflict known as the Suez Crisis and the Arab-Israeli War of 1956 . Egypt effectively won that war when American President Dwight Eisenhower pressured the invading forces to withdraw, leaving the canal in Egypt's hands.
