Why are there volcanoes on the west coast of North America but not on the east coast?

Answer to Question 1

The west coast is an active continental margin where the Juan de Fuca plate is subducting beneath the North American plate causing rock melting and volcanic activity. The east coast is a passive continental margin where no such activity occurs.
