Answer to Question 1

The overall height of a storm surge would be increased if it occurred at high tide, and
decreased if it occurred at low tide. A diff erence of a few hours in landfall could make a
tremendous diff erence in the eff ect of the storm surge. Because tides do not happen at
the same time each day, there is no general best or worst time of day for landfall.

Answer to Question 2

The surface pressure decreases to 920 mb or lower, and the wind speed increases to 251
km/hr or greater.
