Answer to Question 1

Answer: Presumably, the student should describe the O through C horizons of a mature soil and then elaborate with features that would be associated with the soil (calcification, color, natural plant cover, etc.) This could vary widely depending on the location.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The color is the result of chemical processes which become more or less common as the soil forming factors vary. Often color does not infer fertility, as some of the fresh Andisols which are black and infertile prove. Reds indicate oxidation, greys and blues indicate poor drainage and saturation of the medium for part of the year, and so on.
