Corey's self-efficacy for math appears to be fairly low anyway, but his poor performance and his teacher's and peers' negative comments are undoubtedly making matters worse.

Answer to Question 2

No. Given the very public nature of the students' performance in the math game, Corey probably wants to do as well as he can. Yet Mr. Balcom insults him (I can't believe you haven't figured it out yet) and implies that he is not putting forth his best effort
