Answer to Question 1

A

Answer to Question 2

The U.S. soil classification system, Soil Taxonomy, was first developed in 1975. The basis of the Soil Taxonomy system is field observation of soil properties and morphology. The Soil Taxonomy is a hierarchical system with six categories. The lowest and more precise level of the classification system is a soil series. An estimated 15,000 different soil series are identified. Sequentially higher-level categories are soil families (6,000), soil subgroups (1,200), soil great groups (230), soil suborder (47), and soil orders (12). The system is open to addition and modification as the soil sampling database grows. The soil survey also recognizes the importance of anthropogenic influences on soil.
