Forecasting earthquakes is difficult and is often based on either the study of past seismicity (paleoseismology) and the identification of seismic gaps or the observation and measurement of phenomena that might precede an earthquake. By comparison, early warning systems for volcanic activity are possible through integrated seismographic networks and monitoring.
