Answer to Question 1

Black holes are gravitational vacuums, so much so that light cannot escape. Consequently, they are really difficult to see (hence, black hole). In order to look for them, we must look for hot matter emitting x-rays as it is being engulfed by a black hole. In and of itself, this means that we can only look for black holes that are not isolated, as we need to be able to detect whatever matter is near them as it is being sucked in in order to determine the location of a black hole.

Answer to Question 2

Spiral galaxies are flat, disk-shaped bodies with arms extending in a spiral out from the nucleus. Elliptical galaxies are spherical to rugby-ball shaped and include the biggest and smallest galaxies we have identified. Irregular galaxies are the least common, show no symmetry, and may be irregular due to gravitational distortion by a nearby massive body.

When Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first mercury thermometer, he called "zero degrees" the lowest temperature he was able to attain with a mixture of ice and salt. For the upper point of his scale, he used 96°, which he measured as normal human body temperature (we know it to be 98.6° today because of more accurate thermometers).

Once thought to have neurofibromatosis, Joseph Merrick (also known as "the elephant man") is now, in retrospect, thought by clinical experts to have had Proteus syndrome. This endocrine disease causes continued and abnormal growth of the bones, muscles, skin, and so on and can become completely debilitating with severe deformities occurring anywhere on the body.

Most strokes are caused when blood clots move to a blood vessel in the brain and block blood flow to that area. Thrombolytic therapy can be used to dissolve the clot quickly. If given within 3 hours of the first stroke symptoms, this therapy can help limit stroke damage and disability.
