Hadean refers to the earliest interval (eon) of Earth historybefore the oldest known rocks. The name Hadean derives from Hades, which is Greek for underworlda reference to the hellish conditions that prevailed on Earth early in its history. Hadean is an informal term used on some geologic time scales but not all.
