Where there is a lack of balance between accumulation and wastage, a glacier will advance or retreat. If accumulation exceeds wastage, the ice advances. If wastage exceeds accumulation, the ice retreats. The ice front remains stationary when the glacial budget is in balance: accumulation and wastage are balanced.
