Answer to Question 1

Water first flows down (infiltration) through porous substrate. The groundwater flows down due to the pull of gravity and then back up toward low-elevation areas because of the tendency to move to areas of low pressure.

Answer to Question 2

Natural levees are built by successive floods. When a stream overflows its banks, it leaves coarse sediment deposited in strips bordering the channel. These strips are natural levees. The area behind the levee is poorly drained, which causes back swamps to develop. Streams that are blocked from entering the main channel by these levees are called yazoo tributaries.
