Answer to Question 1

B

Answer to Question 2

From the 15th century onward, the Russian Empire steadily expanded in geographic size.
Initially, expansion occurred in the hinterland of the core region of Russia, and then expanded
toward the northeast. Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, Russia expanded eastward through
Siberia. During the 18th and especially 19th centuries, Russia expanded to include the Far East
and the Transcaucases. This latter expansion reflected Russia's attempt to gain access to warm
water ports.
