The most deadly conflict present in the region is in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; the causes of this conflict are complex, but are related to ethnic disputes over territorial divisions. Another low-intensity ethnic conflict currently exists in Mali. Somalia's government disintegrated in 1991 and the state is currently controlled by various class-based warlords and their own private militias.
