Answer to Question 1

Throughout much of Sub-Saharan Africa, various animist religions are practiced. Beginning around 700 CE Coptic Christianity was introduced in parts of the Sahel; as a whole, however, Christianity (mainly Catholicism and Protestantism) diffused northward throughout the continent as a result of European colonizers and missionaries. Beginning around 1,000 years ago, Islam steadily diffused, largely southward, across the continent.
