Answer to Question 1

The habitable zone around a star is the region in which a planet can maintain a surface temperature at which liquid water can exist.

Answer to Question 2

Japan, with a population of about 128 million people, is about the size of California (which has about 37 million people). Most of Japan (85) is forested mountains, leaving only a relatively small area on the coastal plains for settlement. Because this land area is so small, virtually every human activity is tightly packed into it. These activities or different types of landuse include homes and apartments, farms, factories, recreation, and everything else you can imagine.
