There is a great deal of linguistic complexity in the Caucasus Region, including Caucasian, Indo-European, and Altaic languages. In addition, there are many people in this region who are Muslim. It is in this region that secessionist movements have formed, especially in Chechnya and Dagestan.

Answer to Question 2

With remote sensing from satellites combined with limited onshore and offshore observations such as ice cores that can include radar and photography. The images are then used to delineate the edges of the sheets and shelves, estimate the fresh water runoff, and estimate the depth/mass of the existing ice.
