Because of its isolation, Socotra has a unique environment and a great deal of environmental diversity featuring plants and animals that are found nowhere else. Pharmaceutical companies have begun harvest plants on the island, along with potential development of oil reserves, and increased tourist development; pose a long-term threat to Socotra.
