Explain why strong vertical wind shear is a necessary ingredient of all intense thunderstorms.

Answer: The strong winds aloft push the updrafts ahead of the downdrafts and allow the rising air to feed additional moisture into the storm. Thus with strong wind shear, the downdrafts can grow in size without cutting off the storm's supply of water vapor in the updrafts.
