Cognitive motivation theory best explains why specific praise is more effective than general praise. Specific praise provides learners with information about their evolving understanding, so it helps them better make sense of their experiences. Both general and specific praise can be reinforcing, which is all that is required according to behaviorism, and humanistic theory focuses more on the whole person than on specific aspects of learning, such as learners' constructing knowledge.
