Since colonial times, women have served in the armed forces. Yet, in 1940, at the outset of World War II, just 2 percent of armed forces personnel were women. By the 2003 War in Iraq, women represented about 7 percent of all deployed U.S. troops. By mid-December, 2003, eight of the 460 War in Iraq fatalities were women. In 2003, women represented 15 percent of all people in the armed forces.
