The causes of substance abuse and dependence are complex and generally are rooted in some combination of biological, psychological, and social factors that vary for each person and for each substance. Also keep in mind that the development of substance dependence does not follow an established timetable. One person might drink socially for years before abusing alcohol, whereas someone else might become addicted to crack (crystalline form of cocaine) in a matter of weeks.
