Answer to Question 1

Fault-block basins developed along the eastern margin of North America during the Triassic due to
upwelling magma as Pangaea began to break apart. The fault-block mountains eroded and filled the
basins with great quantities of poorly sorted, red, nonmarine detrital sediments. The Triassic faultblock
basins were the site of extensive basalt volcanism and intrusion concurrent with red, non-marine
detrital sediments.

Answer to Question 2

The first event was rifting between Laurasia and Gondwana during the Late Triassic, which initiated
the Atlantic Ocean. Second was rifting and movement of the various Gondwana continents during the
Late Triassic and Jurassic. Third, South America and Africa began to separate during the Late Jurassic.
Australia and Antarctica separated and Greenland began to separate from Europe. Finally, during the
Cenozoic, Australia continued moving northward, Greenland separated from Europe, and North
America formed a separate landmass.
