Answer to Question 1

Water tables in deserts tend to be located at great depth, so the stream cannot draw on water to replace
water lost to evaporation and absorption into the ground. The water runs only sporadically.

Answer to Question 2

The headwaters of these rivers are outside the desert, and there is enough water to compensate for
losses by evaporation and infiltration.
