Answer to Question 1

For a hazard assessment study, former landslides as well as potential sites of mass movement must be
identified. Scarps, open fissures, displaced or tilted objects, a hummocky surface, and sudden changes
in vegetation are some of the features that are indicated these areas. It may be difficult to see these
features due to weathering, erosion, and vegetation though.

Answer to Question 2

Permafrost is ground that remains permanently frozen. Heat from an insulated building will escape
through the floor, thaw the ground below, and turn it into a soggy mush. The building then settles
unevenly into the ground and numerous structural problems result.
