Answer to Question 1

With lithostatic pressure, the stresses are the same in all directions, so a rock will be squeezed into a
smaller space. In differential pressure, the stresses are stronger in some directions, so parts of the rock
may rotate or parts may slide past other parts (shearing).

Answer to Question 2

Chemical reactions proceed at different rates and require different amounts of time to complete. The
amount of time that a rock has available during metamorphism may affect what type of rock it
becomes.
