Answer to Question 1

Compression in which forces are directed toward one another along the same line; rock layers tend to
be shortened in the direction of stress by fracturing or folding. Tension results from forces acting in
opposite directions along the same line to lengthen or pull apart rocks. Shear forces act parallel to one
another, but in opposite directions, resulting in displacement along closely spaced planes.

Answer to Question 2

Stress results from forces applied to a given area of rock. If the stress on the rock exceeds the rock's
internal strength, the rock undergoes strain. Strain is deformation caused by stress; strain and
deformation are synonyms

Although the Roman numeral for the number 4 has always been taught to have been "IV," according to historians, the ancient Romans probably used "IIII" most of the time. This is partially backed up by the fact that early grandfather clocks displayed IIII for the number 4 instead of IV. Early clockmakers apparently thought that the IIII balanced out the VIII (used for the number 8) on the clock face and that it just looked better.
