Answer to Question 1

Resonance occurs and the swaying of the building will be amplified. The potential for damage or
collapse is greatly increased.

Answer to Question 2

Earthquakes require an elastic response. The deepest earthquakes occur within sinking lithospheric
plates, which lose their elasticity below about 700 kilometers because of increased heat and pressure.
The transition from brittle/elastic conditions to plastic conditions actually occurs at much shallower
depths than this in most areas of the world and typically corresponds with the base of the lithosphere
