Answer to Question 1

Answer: Flat and platy particles act like a throwing-disk in currents, allowing them to stay aloft for long distances even in minimal current. This makes them prone to staying suspended in the air even when there is not much of a wind current.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Because of the cold water, temperatures in these deserts are generally colder. Also because of the colder temperatures, these areas are extremely dry in spite of lying adjacent to the ocean. Because the air is cooled from below, it doesn't rise upward to create clouds and precipitate. These coastal areas are also famous for their fogs.
