Answer to Question 1

Answer: Chemical convection occurs when differences in density are due to chemistry rather than temperature. In the outer core, this occurs when iron crystallizes and sinks to adhere to the inner core. This process leaves the remaining molten materials that are richer in lighter elements. These lighter elements make the melt buoy upward above the iron-rich material, contributing to convection.
