An order has arrived that the original cube must be broken down into eight cubic pieces of marble, all of the same dimension of 6 square feet per cube. What is the total surface area of the marble now?

Answer to Question 1

Answer: The cube has now been broken into eight smaller cubes with the dimensions 1 foot by 1 foot by 1 ft, equaling a total surface area of 6 square feet per cube; 8 times 6 square feet equals 48 square feet. So the surface area is increasing.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Mechanical weathering because the rock is being broken down, but not chemically altered.
