Answer to Question 1

Answer: Shield volcanoes have broad bases that can cover hundreds of square miles. Although these volcanoes can be incredibly tall (exceeding 10 km in some cases), they have slopes that are very gentle, between 2 and 10. Cinder cones, on the other hand, are very small. They are only a few hundred meters tall. However, they have the steepest sides of any volcano (33). Finally, composite cone volcanoes are somewhere between the two. They are thousands of meters tall, but not as tall as shield volcanoes. They have steep sides, but not as steep as a cinder cone's.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Quiescent eruptions involve very fluid basaltic lavas. Explosive eruptions will occur when dissolved gases in magma expand, moving upward and carrying magma with them.
