Irregularities in coastal outlines are due, in part, to differences in the way shoreline materials erode. What causes these differences?

The highest waves of the December 1992 storm coincided with high tide. Do you think that the damage during the storm would have been any different if the highest waves had occurred during low tide? Explain your answer.

Answer to Question 1

The differences in how shoreline materials erode can be attributed to different rock strength, different degrees of consolidation among sedimentary deposits and rocks, the extent of fractures, joints, and faults along which outcrops disintegrate under wave attack, and the presence or absence and orientation of bedding or foliation planes in the rock.

Answer to Question 2

When the tide is high, waves break closer to shore and erode more sediment than when the tide is low. It is possible that the damage resulting from wave erosion would have been less if the storm had peaked during low tide instead of high tide.
