In addition to time, Figure 14.12 also illustrates some of the effects of composition and physical characteristics of the parent material, climate, and vegetation

The mountain builds at a rate of 310 mm/year, but when a large mass is achieved, the lower crust tends to spread horizontally, limiting vertical growth. Furthermore, erosion works to remove the rock and wear down the mountain, even while isostatic adjustment leads to uplift.
