Answer to Question 1

Both photos have rocks that look layered. The layers in the Chapter 5 opener look very uniform, that is the layers all appear to have similar thicknesses. The layers in the Chapter 6 opener have layers of various thicknesses and irregularities within the layers (rippling effect or lenses). I would look at the texture and composition of my samples to determine rock type. The sedimentary rock might consist of individual grains or a fine-grained texture if the material precipitated from water. The metamorphic rock would have an interlocking texture of grains (recrystallization), minerals that form under metamorphic conditions, and crystals all aligned in one direction (foliation).
