Answer to Question 1

ANS: C
The person's own home is the preferred location for a ventilator-dependent patient; it is the least expensive option and provides the best quality of life for these individuals. Long-term acute care hospitals are designed to care for patients who require extensive monitoring and care. These pa-tients may still be acutely ill, but they no longer require the intensive care provided in a hospital CCU. A subacute care unit is an intermediate care site, which is not as expensive as an acute care site and provides somewhat more patient independence and quality of life. A skilled nursing fa-cility is considered a long-term care site. These sites do not have the resources to treat acutely ill patients.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
ICUs and CCUs provide invasive monitoring, extensive care, and a higher ratio of practitioners to patients. Therefore, these units are both more expensive and provide the least patient inde-pendence and quality of life. All the other options provide the patient with more independence and, as such, quality of life.
