Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
Before the delivery of a mandatory breath (constant flow, volume-controlled continuous manda-tory ventilation VC-CMV), patient effort reaches the trigger threshold, and a normal breath is delivered (breath on left). The second breath (right) is patient triggered, but the pressure curve (arrow) is concave because of the patient's active attempt to inhale.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: D
The oscillations on the flow-time curve represent a phenomenon known as ringing, spiking, or overshoot. This is due to a nonsmooth breath delivery. Increasing the inspiratory rise time smooths out the breath delivery by increasing the time it takes for the ventilator to reach the set flow rate.
