Answer to Question 1

ANS: C
Among the acute conditions for which airway clearance therapy may be indicated are (1) acutely ill patients with copious secretions, (2) patients in acute respiratory failure with clinical signs of retained secretions (audible abnormal breath sounds, deteriorating arterial blood gases, chest ra-diographic changes), (3) patients with acute lobar atelectasis, and (4) patients with abnormalities due to lung infiltrates or consolidation.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
In general, sputum production must exceed 25 to 30 ml/day for airway clearance therapy to sig-nificantly improve secretion removal.
