Answer to Question 1

ANS: D
Total cycle time = 60 s  frequency = 60  14 breaths/min = 4.29 s.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
Total cycle time = 60 s  frequency = 60  20 = 3 s. There are four equal parts to the total cycle time (add the I from the inspiratory time-to-expiratory time ratio to the E from the inspirato-ry time-to-expiratory time ratio, or 1 + 3 = 4). Inspiratory time = Total cycle time  (I + E) = 3  4 = 0.75 s.
