Disturbances of the anterior lobe may cause overproduction of the growth hormone STH. If overproduction occurs in childhood (as in this case), it causes excessive growth of bones, or gigantism. In adults, an excess of STH causes overgrowth of tissues, called acromegaly. The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) involves the excessive secretion of ADH. Diabetes insipidus is a disease that results from underproduction of ADH.
