Thyroid scan (radioscan or scintiscan) is used. For this test, the client ingests radioactive iodine or receives it intravenously (IV). Then a scanogram (x-ray study) is obtained to indicate the amount of radioactivity in the entire body. If the thyroid absorbs a great deal of the radioactive iodine, the thyroid is hyperactive, suggesting possible hyperthyroidism. Thyroid suppression test measures levels of radioactive iodine uptake and serum T4 after 7 to 10 days of receiving thyroid hormone. TSH stimulation test measures body's response to TSH by following levels of radioactive iodine uptake and protein-bound iodine uptake.
