Treatment of anaphylactic shock involves removal of the causative agent and administration of antihistamines to block the effects of histamine on the blood vessels, bronchioles, and gastrointestinal tract. In severe cases, epinephrine may be used to counteract the vasodilation that occurs. However, this is not the immediate intervention. An allergy test may be performed once the emergency is over if an allergen has not been identified. An ice pack to the site can slow absorption.
