Aldosterone promotes sodium and water retention, to increase blood volume and further elevate blood pressure. ADH assists in regulation of water balance in the kidneys, to maintain the body's homeostasis. Renin is a hormone that is important in blood pressure regulation. Atrial natriuretic peptide increases kidney filtration and blood flow when blood volume increases.

In chronic renal failure or end-stage renal disease (ESRD), the kidneys do not function properly, so adequate erythropoietin is not produced. This usually results in anemia, a common finding in these clients. Hypoxia in tissues stimulates erythropoietin production. Impaired oxygenation usually occurs as a result of injury, or cardiac or pulmonary disorders.
